Mavic specced bikes.

That's great thanks. Can't decide if the rarity factor makes it worth changing over from XTR. There's someone selling 2 of the rear mechs on eBay right now. BIN of £192 each!!!

Re:

Ha!I karmaed an 840 with a missing inner cage last year here. They are completely rebuildable which made them perfect for my downhiller whereas if you stack an XTR it goes in the bin......

How well does these work when combined with Shimano shifters and cassettes?

Mavic's Technical Information for 840, 841 and 845, (MTB), states that, "these derailleurs will index with any evenly spaced 6, 7 and 8 speed freewheels".
It then goes on to state, "The following freewheels are compatible..., Maillard Aris, all Shimano", and then further states, "the following chains are compatible, all Sedis chains and all Shimano chains except Hyperglide models".

This is all in the context of using their 825 Shifters of course.

Nice kit

I think I've got FD & RD somewhere. Having said that, they may be road derailleurs, but perhaps usable for MTB as well?

Also have a pair of (road) hubs and a 1-1/8" headset.

I ran a Sedis chain with a Maillard Aris 8 speed freewheel block on Paris Gao Dakkar hubs with the 840 rear and XT thumbs. It was by far and away the clunkiest and most fiddly set up I ever used. The Hyperglide cassette was in a different league in terms of smoothness.I remember my lbs selling the groups for peanuts in the mid 90s after it flopped. Its such an interesting(albeit fiddly)and beautifully made groupset. Its price was staggering considering its Simplex underpinnings.Pity its as good as out of reach for most of us now.

I've held the cranks and rings but never ridden a Mavic group. From what I remember the craftsmanship was top shelf and I was very impressed with the design. Were their any issues with quality or did they just decide to leave this market to the Japanese?

I have the headset - such a well engineered design.

Anyone own up to having the seatpost? Think I've seen everything else in the FS section.

Re:

The build quality was second to none and they placed a huge emphasis on it`s rebuildability which didnt fire the public`s imagination like XTR did.It was totally out classed by XTR performance and price wise and it was waaay heavy. It also had no brakeset.I love it :D .
