Mavic 801 Rear Derailleur Rebuild Advice

I'm rebuliding the above rear mech and having issues with the spring tensioning. I can assemble the mech components minus the spring and everything tightens up and spins freely. Once i introduce the tensioned spring and tighten everthing up the the mech siezes up.

Does anybody have any experience or tips on how to successfully apply the spring tension. Any info would be much appreciated

Hi, if you mean the coil spring 026 then I would assemble that area minus the spring to make sure all rotates as it should when tightened up, sometimes the tab arm 035 binds or there is a little burr somewhere that helps it stick at some point. when all is good add the spring and select the amount of wind back force you want and tighten up. A few goes at this may be needed as the spring tends to kick the centre bolt to one side if there is a lot of wear or if there is any out of roundness to the housing due to age and crashes etc, careful reliving of any binding areas may be needed but little by little.

Correct, it is re-seating the 026 spring that is causing the issues. I've done the build minus the spring and everything rotates freely. Thanks for the advise regarding the tab arm and the centre bolt, I'll check for any binding in those areas and hopefully be able to re-assemble it

The 801 derailleur came off my very dusty Edison 24" Lo Profile, which has been hanging up unused for the best part of 25 years. I'd loosened the bolts to lengthen the cage to work with a larger freewheel on a Vitus 979 but lost the spring tension in the process.

Cheers, hope it helps. I use a light Teflon grease in there https://www.s3i.co.uk/loctite-superlube ... Gwod-50EvQ not cheap but you don't need much, that GT85 stuff is white cake with little Teflon. to adjust the guide position you should only need about half a turn to move it.

Also if it is only slightly sticking when moved slowly by hand, that's fine, as when the chain is dancing it will work perfectly.
