Marin or Not?

The PDF in your gallery works fine. Once you figure out add Marin and 1990 as tags.

17" is the only womens model for that bike. So you're ok there. With 200GS it's very much bottom end though. A typical first bike groupset of the era.

1989 not 90

Yes, but didnt the whole range at that time share the same frame??, will know if and when the lovely Debbie Jones replies.
The pdf is from 1989,not 90.
thanks for posting the pdf though Fluffy,

The bike now has full lx spec throughout , apart from the stx front derialleur. lx used to be a bit special back then too, and was all i could afford at the time, and more than served its purpose.
And i really dont care anyway, i have a deep love for the bike. and i have had her for 16/17 years when other bikes have come and gone

have now got later marin white industry cranks to add to it( made by sugino that year, grrrrrrrr), NOS lx front derailler, nos lx combi shifters, hg50 cassette. new onza porc repro,s. black v good condition x lite bar ends, stronglight black threaded headset, quill converter, and new marin ahead stem. nos zoom hanger, NOS Black STX Canti's , similar shimano DX u brake, which im gonna make all shiny
has anyone any thoughts on whether im gonna have difficulty getting an 8 speed block on a 130mm rear, i know steel has some flex but will i stress the frame, the nos shifters were for 8 speed you see?? and in my ignorance did not forsee a problem
Im close to going with the neon lime yellow paint ( or as close as i can get). think it will look nice yellow with black, not sure what to do about the forks though, i like the way they look, and may just get them gloss black powder coated
the bike wont be faithful to the original but semi decently specced, and should look pretty with all the shiny new stuff.
how do i contact this gil fella for decals?

Thanks

Charlieboy

I'm getting lost in all the years being banded about and few other Marin threads

Should make a good build up.

Fit the cassette as 7 speed (if an 8 speed HG50 then just remove a cog and spacer) and you'll just not use the 8th on the shifter as the rear mech stops will stop it.
If your hub is 7 speed thats where the problem will be.

Ahhh

Why Fuffy,
you seem to know a thing or two, right im just about to buy a 8 speed rear deore hub on here ,not great spec i know but sturdy, but black hub and good conditon,
my current rear wheel rim is getting very thin from that bloody u brake, would prefer to do this an utilise all the gears available, but will what i imagine to be a wider hub requiring greater distance between the dropouts, fit without damaging or stressing the frame, can i put an 8 speed cassette and hub on a bike with 130mm spacing that was designed to take a 7 speed then?
sorry im not good at making things very clear

I know what you're doing, and 5mm is not a lot, also If I remember correctly it was slightly wider when no wheel was in. So 2 or 3 mm is nothing.

Do it I say :D

on your head be it,lol

cool, thats good enough for me, yes the spacing was 132/3mm,

front wheel and the only thing original to the bike is straight and true, loads of life left in rim but has a litle bit of play, should i replace bearings and repack or i bought an lx mavic front wheel on ebay on the 23-06-09, still has not arrived though, havent chased it yet though, suppose i could tell him to stuff it and get me money back, would be nice to keep something original i think,

back to square one, nearly

Right after a few more reminder emails i finally got a response from the lovely but somewhat annoyed i feel,Debbie Jones at ATB Sales UK, here is what she had to say

"Hello again Charlie

Ok I have checked with a colleague and back in the day, we didn’t spec the bike with that cable routing. Our thoughts are that the shop or previous owner must have changed the brakes before you acquired it.

Still not having it,lol, I stripped the bike by hand back in 91/92 and there was no evidence of any alteration, and im confident the bike was made in some Marin factory this way, and that its completely original. and why change the brakes, changed the brakes from what to what, bottom mounted U brake to top, From Canti to U, it doesnt make sense
I have emailed Debbie again asking if there is anyone else who may know more, but im not holding my breath , as i think she is truly fed up with me at the moment.
Everything else fits with the frame being an 1989 Marin Murwoods,

I have also emailed Marin themselves, with this URL, so who knows.
again any thought would be appreciated.

MYSTERY SOLVED!!

Was doing my usual Marin search on ebay this morning and came across this little beauty!!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Classic-Marin-Mui ... 286.c0.m14

bike is completely original it would seem!
if you look closely at the rear brake cable routing it is identical to mine! triangular not curved.
mine had black seatpost stem and forks but other than that it is identical in every way
So I'm happy, and belive my bike has been concusively identified as a 1989 Marin Muirwoods
Now can anyone tell me how and where i can get my bike back to that beautiful colour please and i will be a happy man!

Thanks for all your help folks especially WDpro, Benandemu and Mr Fluffy over there.
