Marin afterburner

Here it is, my Marin afterburner (yes, I am told that it's an actual name...).

No idea what year it is, suggestions?







It's exactly as I bought it, a week or so ago. I only changed the pedals because it came with clip ons

It could be a slightly older frame with a few newer parts added. The paint job looks a good match for the 1997/98 model in the catalogue here:

I've got a '97 Team Marin frame with a serial number that begins 9708F - which I've always taken to mean August '97.

It's under the bottom bracket - if you can find it I have a guide to decode I can dig out.

Mine was notchey on a '94 Marin. Replaced with a Ritchey Logic version for £10. Made a remover tool from some old pipe following a guide online.

Looks like a bog standard Dia-tech headset, with all that junk attached to it, it may have been over tightened. It could just need new bearings. But then as above a new headset is hardly any money.

Get it fitted properly though, as you've already found, its an important part of a bicycle and fitting it incorrectly can really fcuk things up.

Revised my estimate looks like a 97' with newer parts. As to your headset woes agree it is probably bearings, all that extra length on the steerer probably isn't helping though. Personally I would put a higher rise stem on and a pair of riser bars to get the same effect....

But that would change nothing, wouldn't it? If the total distance is the same, however achieved, it stresses the bearing the same way.
But I agree, the handlebar is now very high. The previous guy must have been taller than me, or wanted to keep his back upright.
I will just get rid of the extender. Less weight to carry around
