M2 DOES have externally taper butted chromoly stanchions. The raised sliders though do mean you can mix '92 M1 or '93 M-Sport stanchions to the '93 M2 sliders and mod the travel without losing the good bushing overlap the forks start with and also get the external preload adjusters.

Thanks for everyone's offers and advice. I did finally find a Manitou 1994 MSport on Ebay for a reasonable price. They are on their way now so hopefully they work out. Although another pair could be desirable in the near future since my friends are now asking about a pair for their kid's bikes!
