Manchester commuter route advice

Folks,
After Xmas I've decided to start biking to work again, now that we live nearer, I've been told of an old rail trail that gets me into Monton, so I'd like to be able to get from Monton to Hulme with as little traffic or road miles as possible, any route advice would be greatly received.

I can't really help on the route thing but google earth may help? I've lived in Hulme, if your bikes anything better than a BSO have a big ass lock if it's being left outside.

Won't be left outside, work at the brewery. When I was younger used to bike there from my folks and had the odd mistaken profession hassle.
