Nearing completion of Cannondale F900 rebuild, with only chainrings and chain to find (94BCD rings hanging around, anyone?)

I have Magura HS33s, which are proving a bit tricky to get set up. I am running Conti Race Kings and it appears the Magura booster is just too small to fit over them properly. Does this sound likely?

Can I run them without the boosters...?

Also the master pistons pump well but the slaves much less so. Is there a guide on bleeding here somewhere?

You can run without boosters. I run a hs33 rear and don't use one, i dont think it makes any difference to the performance of using a booster or not.

Not sure about bleeding them, as never done. I did have the slave cable fail on a front hs33, but it was ging to cost me more a service, bleed and to replace the cable. I bought another front off ebay for £20.
 
seems a shame to ditch the boosters as they are the LE 'Olympia' edition with gold hardware. all worked perfectly with the tangerine paint & gold decals. maybe i'm being too girly about it.

will run without and hang onto the boosters so i can sell them as a set in the future if needs be.

part of me wishes i'd gone for XT or Cane Creek Curve V's instead, but never mind.
 
I have had different v-brakes in the past, but prefer maguras now. when they setup right they feel great and performance is way better than v's
 
I agree with simon there. I have just gone back to v's and they feel spongey and weak compared. Wish I hadntgot rid of mine now.
 
Love Maggies, a few options you may want to consider;

1) EVO 2 Booster Kit (Still available) will accomodate most size tyres unless your going 'Monster Truck' size.

2) Or using the conventional brackets without booster but with the Elbows set up against the frame to prevent the unit from moving away from the rim. Maggies do exert a lot of pressure so setting up correctly is important, it can be lengthy but worth it.

On the bleeding of Maggies, they are actually easier than conventional Hyd brakes, search Youtube for a plethora of videos on how to do it, including some young lads filling them with water, apparently a common thing for the Trail Bike fraternity to do.

Some people used to grind the boosters down to make fit, looks ugly and sometimes messy but works. EVO 2 set doest give you a wider aparture to accomodate tyres. I can take measurments when i get home if it helps.
 
I bleed mine off the bike - easy even if you have set them up as loosening the mounting bolts doesn't change pad positioning.

I tape them up onto a shelf, let the fluid into the bottom and gravity helps the bubbles rise to the top. Once you have done it you should be good for a decade or so!
 
I have a similar problem with Maguras and Race Kings on my Kona - i can't take the wheels out (or better back into the frame) because i don't have enough space although i already removed on side of of the brake with the QR. That's not enough, I also have to remove the brake pad as well, then it works - but the booster is not a problem :roll:

My conclusion (and plan for this weekend) is: exit Magura, enter Speed Dial :twisted:
