MacRetro chat and rides thread

Its about being with your mates. Its about escaping to corners of countryside where cars and grown ups can't get to. Mostly its about fun.

I'd rather not ride than ride on the road.

I'd rather not ride on the road either but I've no option if I want to get to my nearest trails which are around 3 miles on road from my house.

When I was in my early to middle teens, my brother and our friends would often be 10 to 15 miles from home having ridden off-road along the coast following the old railway line. Our parents certainly didn't know where or how far away we were.

Around 1980 my then wife and I bought road/touring bikes from Sandy Gilchrist in Embra, I soon realised that it wasn't the same as the cycling I did in my teens. It was as boring as feck. The bike lay unused till it was eventually sold. Didn't ride a bike again till I bought a Saracen Tufftrax Comp from Edin Bike Co-op in 1989 solely for the long walk-ins for some of the Munroes, I was a Munro-bagger back then.
I soon realised what I'd been missing, getting away to places others can't or won't go to, the fun of a fast downhill or exploring some unknown place.

Don't know if this is of interest or not BUT :?
The SYHA are closing 5 hostels soon.

Melrose
Arden
Broadmeadows
Kirk Yetholm
Canisbay

Its just that I was thinking about any EPIC rides (CtC) and that.

blah blah blah typical mountain biker pish! Big descents 50mph+ in a group or on your todd will bring about as big a grins as you'll get on a mountain bike. You just need to work a bit but the rewards outweigh the suffering!

Where should I ride tomorrow? Was gonna head to GT/inners but the road is closed between eddleston and peebles and I can't be bothered if that means a big diversion.

Don't especially want to drive very far, I don't think Carron Valley is worth the drive, where else does that leave me? Pentlands? Blairadam?

The one thing I can say is that i'll be on the club roost, so 100mm full suspension.

or flying along in a bunch, head down taking your turn at the front, struggling to hang onto a wheel, having to close the gaps, sprinting for summits or the 30 signs.. its all good :D and then there's lycra and razors

guess it's alot to do with where you are, i'm 15 miles south of glasgow, but i can turn straight onto hours upon hours of good surfaced farm roads (in the 80s/90s the back roads were terrible and the A roads were decent, now it's the opposite), good views, nice and undualting and most important little traffic, can normally hear the cars in the distance before we can see em.

plenty of local trails too, best of both worlds

blairmudam is always a blast

me and dad's going out at 10 tomorrow , glenrothes urban stuff
if you fancy it

10 could be a bit early for me mikee, might try blairadam though. Not been there before, what's it like for finding your way around?

aah
right
when you turn into blairadam youll see a path on the left ,sort of straight in front of you
thats kinda the way in , anyway drive down the road about a mile and you'll find a car park
pedal back up the road and hit that path 200 or so yards and take a right into the trees follow that take the next right , foot path /foot bridge the trail continues just next to the bridge keep bearing right at any "what way do i go now " moments ,watch the wet foot bridge you should arrive at the green gates down from the carpark
head thru the gates and go stright on , dont follow the lh fire road (tho if you do you'll find some good stuff )
follow the fire road in front of you till you meet a "junction" , on the north side youll find a trail ,head up there and keep on that path till you hit another path keep on till you hit fire road ,follow that for about 2 miles
till you see the radio mast ,take a right , no trees to your left and trees on your right , the trail heads on your right about 400 yards on
in the trees take a left and enjoy

thinking about it if you can do a 10 start me and dad will sheperd you round
but i need to be home for 12 (so im told)
