A slicked up mtb will never be anything other than a 'chaser' as opposed to a racer which will leave you for dead. Done both routes and for speed its large diameter skinny wheels and drop bars every time ;)
I was meaning old roadie versus new - if you set aside exotic lightweight materials, is the average road bike of today a significantly better experience than one from 20 odd years ago?

Edit: ah, question answered :)

maybe similar to F1 cars, they look he same kinda but not in practice. probably to a lesser extent mind

I see Christmas has come early to a certain hoose in Broxburn!

Talking of which, now pishing doon wi snow here too.

Nice work eck noo git buildin.

Its pishin here too.......aye sun pishin in ma windae    its glorious and I'm away oot for a run then back tae bed

At entry level to mid range a modern road bike easily outclasses an oldster no argument. High end stuff has always been at the pinnacle of design and thus its more about the rider than the bike.

I like old cause its cheap and comfy but I do like decent brakes which my current roady lacks, probably going to fit centre pulls which are old but way better than single pivot caliper. Old centrepulls are easy to get hold of for pennies.

Compared to Kaiser on his modern bike I'd be a bit slow but compared to a hybrid I'm still pretty nippy on the falcon.

Not convinced, like the idea of slicks on a mountain bike

This is gay, why don't you try to swap the old roadie for new? Honestly a much more pleasant experience.
Is there really that much of a difference? Besides better brakes and possibly more/slicker gears? Have to admit, I secretly like the look of Gazz's road bike

think there are improvements with a more modern bike but I've just not got the thin tire love mentality- If you want it ZZ give me a shout ;)

I'm not sure you guys qualify for JAOB - don't you both own proper retro and even vintage steeds? ;)

Help yourselves gents!

I qualify as according to the retro elite, simply buying from ebay is not enough, you've got to suffer/sweat/dig/delve/finesse/wangle/beg/steal and borrow for the bike to even be worthy- in that case I'm in your gang ;)

I didn't fancy commenting on it on the thread which seemed to get more ludicrous by the day but is it just me or are they bonkers? I also get the feeling they all fooked off to their secret base have promptly became bored with each other and are now back here? JOAB is nail on head for me, some people are just a wee bit too serious(gazz this is a warning  )
