Not convinced, like the idea of slicks on a mountain bike

This is gay, why don't you try to swap the old roadie for new? Honestly a much more pleasant experience.

Is there really that much of a difference? Besides better brakes and possibly more/slicker gears? Have to admit, I secretly like the look of Gazz's road bike

Turn my back on ye for 24 hours and youse gasbags create 5 pages of nonsense. Took me ages to read all that and yet learned nothing to my advantage

A slicked up mtb will never be anything other than a 'chaser' as opposed to a racer which will leave you for dead. Done both routes and for speed its large diameter skinny wheels and drop bars every time ;)

Its the little differences IMO. I love the look of old road bikes but the enjoyment comes from riding fast which is where the modern trumps. A lb or so of the wheels a few off the frame make a lot of difference. Gears at your finger tips and yes brakes that work are a boon. I daresay theres a thrill from descending at break neck speeds with no brakes but its no for me  Also the geometry has improved significantly on an entry level modern, fair distances should be achievable without breaking you back.

FWIW my road bike is a bit of a munter but it delivers in spades in experience, its done everything and more for a £500ish bike. That said my steel fixed wheel is also a joy but is limited in its capacity.

how bloody cool is this >

I was meaning old roadie versus new - if you set aside exotic lightweight materials, is the average road bike of today a significantly better experience than one from 20 odd years ago?

Edit: ah, question answered :)
