MacRetro chat and rides thread

ZZ, you could accept the Stumpy is not designed for GT and keep your modern bikes for the task. I'm no one to talk mind but at least I accept the failings of canti brakes :D

Today i bought a new cartridge BB and nearly died of shock, £20
When you source most of your kit from 2nd hand parts bins you become detached from the real world and real prices

Bottom Bracket is for my full sus, so full sus is now for fairies and me
At least its URT framed and V-braked, none of this modern intelligent designed stuff with disc brakes

Now the good bit, my long lost friend who I've been boozing with this afternoon has made a possibly ill advised offer. He lives in South Wales and is a caravanner at his leisure. He has offered for SSUK10 to bring his caravan along with massive awning to act as MacRetro HQ. This means stuff like kitchen and shower on site which would be heaven for softies like Gaz  Bet he tries to get out of it later but you are my witnesses to his offer. He is known as MagD on retrobike so help me remind him ;)

well i was stuck in the house most of the day with the kids today as the wife was shopping :(

but i did start to detail the massif so i can stick it in next months b.o.t.m. :D atleast one of you guys have to vote for me as i could'nt cope with not getting 1 vote

Sair ribs :( Got within 2 corners of the very end of GT red/black then completely lost it. Good ride up till then though - caught up with a couple of full sussers at Spooky (don't think they knew their way around very well), and narrowly missed someone's bonnet in the Squirrel car park. Really busy though and cantis are hard bloody work. Felt like I was carrying more speed through the berms though, purely because brakes were shite.

I demand 1 finger braking, would it be wrong to get a disc mount welded on the Stumpy?

Oh aye, how do you stop foam grips from slipping? Tried hair spray, but didn't hold.

Noooooo.......it would be very wrong, the stumpy is designed for flowing singletrack, velo is right, trail centres put more demands on bikes than most retro bikes can cope with, esp rigid bikes with shite brakes- cantis look good but as I've said before- they aren't up to the job in the main. We all ride a reasonable amount and you don't want the bike to be the limiting factor. Stumpy is great for all day old school rides but trail centres need bounce and good brakes at the very least. anyway good excuse to increase the number of bikes ;)

hope you are feeling better mate.

AC and pal were at the tress today and by all accounts he had a blast.

I was up all last night chucking up, still feel ropey so a day in the jim jams is all I managed :(

the tress will have a cafe I think whereas drum will be shut. Prob vote for the tress on this one but drum is handy so either is cool for me.

Late December meet GT.

Date say 30th which is a Wednesday.

May be working between Christmas and New year

Hope to have the Zaskar built for then though, Bomber forks, good V brakes and fully geared, it'll be the weapon of choice for now :)

Was meant to go to the Dundee Cyclocross yesterday but like Gazz I was ill so missed it :( ....the other end

Eck when will you arrive in Weej on the 5th? I get there about 3.15 at Queen Street, I'll wear a pink carnation if it helps :)

What time are you others arriving and can you recommend a fine drinking establishment to meet at?

I'll be there about the same time, will be wearing a long brown mack, a trilby, dark glasses and carrying a Daily Record under my right arm :)

My recommendation for boozer would be Rab Ha's near the Merchant city. About 5 mins from the station and about 3 from the restaurant. COuld then saunter up to blackfriars.
