Re:

Further to OCP's suggestion perhaps take the pedals off the bike so she can more easily scoot along like a balance bike. Getting the balance first before starting to pedal is probably a good place to start.

You know what women are like, she'll have a nicer bike than you soon! No more Hightower in your future.

Wouldn'y mind a rerun of the MacRetro C2C we did in 2010, yeah that's right 2010
But I wouldn't mind doing it as a bivvi/bothy trip, might even do it solo.

Just having another read of the C2C trip, brilliant, smiling faces & old guys on RetroBikes :D

Re:

So, if I have a rear wheel with a 10 or 11 speed free hub on it, can I stick some spacers on then fit a 7 speed cassette?

I think yes, just want to check before I press the "Buy" button on some modern 700c wheels.

Re:

I was going to say yes, no problem, but then I remembered something I read a few weeks ago. It might or might not be that simple.
10 speed free-hubs if made out of aluminium have taller splines. Not sure about other 10 speed free-hubs.
Have a wee read here, http://sheldonbrown.com/k7-7.shtml#stay
and this also mentions the potential problem, http://www.bike.bikegremlin.com/2015/07 ... sprockets/

Maybe measure the splines on your 10/11 speed free-hub and compare them to an 8/9 speed free-hub.
