One piece that a lot of people forget too, Durace shared this same design during the time. You can find a 109.5 Durace as well out there if you need one that is in good condition. A steel frame may very well be able to use the durace as it is or alternatively you can swap the axle from the 950 to the durace if the bearings and races are in better condition than the xtr.
Just a tid bit to keep these things going for years to come.....
FluffyChicken is right. The M950 XTR and Dura Ace of the same era were virtually identical. I think the only difference was the length of the BB spindle. The internal components are compatible. The M952 stuff was not serviceable. The problem is, sometimes Dura Ace stuff is even more rare than XTR so do't really expect lower prices by going the Dura Ace route... Unless you're lucky enough to stumble upon one in your parts bin.
Just checked google, BB-7700 is the same design as the M950, so your all right!
I have a Dura-Ace BB-7703 here which isn't takeapartable.
Also learnt that M952 isn't takeapartable which I didn't know, never seen one, all the ones I've had are M950 then.
The BB-7703 I'll sell for the right money! 68x118.5mm
Surprisingly I have found several of the dura ace ones over the years pretty cheap as there just didn't seem to be a lot of love for that era dura ace You are correct that the only difference is the spindle length. Normal double was 109.5 compared to 112.5 and 116 for xtr 950. Bearings are also readily available from places like Boca and mean that the service life of some of these can be darn near infinite.....
