Did Shinano Deore XT rapidfire shifters M-739 come in a 7 speed variant? Or was it only an 8 speed? Was there a way to convert this?

Kind regards

Jason

Re:

Think he's right. Just click 7 times instead of 8. Might help to pull in the limiter screws to restrict movement too.

M735 are your shifters ...

M735 ran until about 1993, were they 8 sp or 7?
M737 8sp ran from 94 to ~96, levers for canti brake
M739 8sp ran from ~96 to ~98, levers for v brake

Only 8spd and it cant be converted.

The rest depends on what you want next.

an 8spd cassette needs a wheel with an 8spd freehub body (often sold as 9/10spd too)

running 8spd shifters on 7spd wheels adds indexing issues as the cassette spacing is slightly different and as the indexing shifts over the wider spaced 7spd cassette it starts to drift, not by much, but enough and then you're always left with the ghost shift.

If you really need to run a 7spd wheel , then leave that ghost shift for where the 8th sprocket would have been - this keeps the indexing fairly sorted.

But then there are so many 8spd wheels about and converting a seven speed wheel only requires an 8/9/10spd freehub body, 10mm allen key, some grease, a spoke key and a wheel alignment tool.

*and you dont really want the old 7spd M735 STi - they're a bit shit. STX does a better job.

Could you Just fit an 8 speed m737 cassette? They are plentiful and durable.

Along with hens teeth, unicorn poo and, and, urm, um, I dunno.

They are neither plentiful and definitely not durable and can cost nearly 8 times more than a perfectly reasonable CS-HG41 8spd cassette

Re:

I beg to differ - I've got at least four in the garage as Spares for the three bikes I have that use them and reckon I'll not need them for quite some time. I've tried to sell one or two in the past and wasn't prepared to almost give them away to be competitive.

Re:

Thanks for all the messages guys and gals!

It was that there was someone selling a pair online saying they were 7 speed although deep down I knew they were 8s so I snagged a bargain as not many people could find them under search pretences

You’re all gems, hope you have a good day!

Kind regards,

Jason
