Lotus Sport Campagnolo (finished pg24) & XTR (finished pg29)

Re: Look for one Lotus Sport and two come along!

As I wait for M900 rear mech to arrive, I thought I’d get on with cabling the Campagnolo steed.... but before one of you funny types decides to post a YouTube clip from Monty Python and the Holly Grail with everyone shouting “Get on with it..I guess I’d better explain why what should have been a half hour job has taken days.

The cabling obviously didn’t take long, but in the odd spare half hour here & there this week, I just couldn’t work out why the front mech struggled to operate correctly.
The problem?
However I adjusted the mech I just couldn’t engage the smallest ring. Now having had a full evening to really investigate I realised that the mech just physically couldn’t swing in far enough without clashing with the seat tube.... of course this Campagnolo mech was never designed to be on this bike and originally the Lotus would have had a B.B. mounted mech, so what to do?
Well surgery of course.... those of a nervous disposition look away now as the following contain disturbing images....

Firstly, the clash with the seat tube.

This was carefully “adjusted to suit” with my dremell.

Second clash

It just needed a little whitling....

Fits perfectly now

All sorted :D

I think Enzo had a word for people like you..........

Re:

Good job Peachy. I,'d maybe put a little bit of paint protection film in tge spot where it's close as even if it just clears it"s always got the potential to rub the paint.

Yes, I’ve got some self adhesive clear vinyl discs for rubbing cables knocking around somewhere...

Re: Look for one Lotus Sport and two come along!

Couldnt you have adjusted the bb axle? or fitted a longer one?

If the mech is hitting the frame because you are trying to move it in too far then surely it would to any frame, so it sounds like the chainrings are to far inboard, not through the design of the mech.

Also is the clamp not meant to close flush, like other mech's? i have never used one so dont know, but looks to small a diameter.

Yes, no, maybe sort of....hence the 2 weeks of arseing about :facepalm: All perfectly good questions so here goes;

Couldn’t you have adjusted the bb axle?
I did think of spacing off the drive side, but that would have brought the nearside crank arm too close to the rear stay and currently the chain-rings are bob on exactly in line with the centre of the rear cassette so I wasn’t keen on changing a near perfect chain-line, I get all 8 gears happily from all 3 rings without any chatter..

or fitted a longer one?
See chain-line reasoning above

Correct, its not the fault of the mech, its just a fact that this frame was designed to take a BB mounted mech not a clamp-on. (BTW a Shimano M900 clamp on has the same issue and a M950 BB mounted version works perfectly, there probably is a clamp on that works fine, only this is obviously a Campy themed build and they didnt make a BB mounted mech)

Also is the clamp not meant to close flush, like other mech's? I have never used one so don’t know, but looks too small a diameter.
It is the correct size, but it’s the Campy “double knuckle” version (basically it has a second extended clamp part so it has two hinges) these are notoriously aggressive so mine is packed out with some 1mm rubber, hence the clamp looking like a bad fit.

PS, we are talking about fine tuning a small amount of extra movement here, the chain at speed could be 'thrown' onto the bottom ring, but I wanted something with a little more finesse..a nice smooth movement, preferably without spending anymore money…. Which I now have..

Re: Look for one Lotus Sport and two come along!

Wooo hooo! The 16” Campagnolo equipped Lotus is finally finished...... weighing in at 25lb 11oz it’s a bit heavier than I’d hoped, but I think that’s down to the Campy kit. :?

One last tweak before the photo shoot, I wasn’t happy with the position of the seat tube logo, just too close to the bottle cage for my liking... :|

Fortunately Gil knocked me off a spare ;)
