London to Brighton on an old Marin

2h3n I did it they were restricting bikes to something like 4 per train. Very long queue of bikes in the station. I was tempted to cycle to the next station in and get in there.

There will probably be a strike whether you can take a bike on a train anyway.

We went for meal afterwards, and didn't catch a train until around 7pm and the trains were pretty free by then.

I have some 1.5" bontrager tyres you can have for the cost of postage.

Thanks for the offer, think I’ll stick with these new ones I’ve got on though. Seen a few people on here saying they like them. Finished most of the bike today, still want:
some new pedals , couple of bottle cages, going to change the saddle for a fancy SQ lab one I’ve got on another bike.
I also want some bar ends and I can’t decide whether to put the narrower Marin bars back on or these slightly wider ones I have on now . Got some ESI grips to go on when I’ve decided.

Could do with some advice on chainline. When in the largest cog at the back it looks a little…off. May be fine I’m just a hit unsure about chainlines. I’ve got the chainring on the middle position on the crank (was a triple) . It’s a hollowtech 2 bottom bracket 68mm shell and I have two spacers on the drive side and one on the other . What chainline should I be aiming for? IMG_0096.jpeg

With chain line, I always set it when in the middle cog on the cassette, or 1 up or down if I have an odd number, with 2 up front I set it 1 either way, if that makes sense? You want it as straight as you can get when in the middle of the cassette, basically. Those tyres look nice actually.

Rides pretty nicely , just need to fine tune the derailleur, didn’t have time today to fiddle about too much. I’m actually thinking about trying to get a medium cage mech as I think there’s a bit of play in this one and as it’s a 1x maybe a shorter cage would be better.
Thanks for the tips on chainline, I’ll check that. Do you just measure with a ruler from the centre of the tube to the centre of the chain?

For the chainline, yes, centre of seat-tube to centre of chain.

I just push a steel ruler next to the seat-tube. measure the distance to the centre of the chain then add ½ of seat-tube / seat-clamp diameter.

EDIT: Looking at the pictures above, looks like your chain is too short. When in the small sprocket, the cage should be further back.

To size the chain I put it on the largest / largest , attached the quick link pulled it together where it could be joined then counted two rivets down and cut there. Is this correct? As you can probably tell from my questions I haven’t been doing this for too long, every build I’m learning from the many mistakes I make (and the helpful people on here) !
