Kona Hot Serial Number List - update 30/10/24

Hi there Elijah, this is a 19" 1993 frame with the Tange Ultimate Ultrastrong Ribbed Down Tube - lovely colour.

Could you take a picture of the Serial Number please, so that I can add it to the Hot Serial Number List.

You mentioned picking it up for free, and a stuck Seat Post; perhaps you could start your own thread in the Reader's MTBs --> 1997 section.

Please send me a Private Message if you would like to add a serial number to this list, or discuss the year currently documented for a frame.
Hi, Pip — I’ve recently been given an old Kona frame with the serial number H6KO 8909. Stripped of paint it weighs 1900 grms on the nose. It has two single brake cable stops on the top tube, two cable stops on the downtube, a cable stop on the right chainstay, a chainstay bridge, rack eyes, and both the downtube and the toptube are oversized but not oval. The dropouts are stamped ‘KONA’ and are not flat but have recesses for axle and quick release mechanism. The frame size is 18”. I assume from the serial number configuration in your list that the frame is a Hodaka made HOT. Am I correct in my assumption and can you date the frame? What tubing is the frame made from? Thanks for anything you can tell me. I’m renovating the frame and need to use the correct decals/transfers when the frame is professionally painted. Cheers, L T Bohl

Pip
Yeah for sure, any tips for getting a stuck seatpost out 😂

Hello and welcome to Retrobike.

Your frame is not a Hodaka built Hot, as these were only built towards the end on the Custom Program in 1998.

It is however a 1996 Hodaka built frame, which were welded for the 1996 catalogue, or 1997. With two Brake Cable Stops on the Top Tube, and no requirement for a Dog Collar, that would place it as a 1996.

With a bare weight of 1,900gr, that puts it in Explosif territory, but the 1996 models are made from Columbus Nivacrom Max OR tubing, which is definitely ovalised.

The 1996 Cinder Cone and Lava Dome do not have two Brake Cable Stops on the Top Tube and require a Dog Collar. The 1997 models have Top Tube Front Mech Routing, and I think would weigh more even without paint.

The description of the Dropouts sound similar to an Aluminium model, so I'm wondering with your mentioning of Oversized tubing that's what it could be. The Cable Stop arrangement would be correct for a 1996 Kula, but that weight of 1,900gr is on the lardy side. Where are the Rack Eyelets that you mentioned - on the Dropouts or on the Seat Stays? The Seat Stay Hank Bush Inserts only became available on the later 1998/9 Aluminium models.

Some pictures would be very helpful.

I'm in a bit of a hurry right now, so give me some time to get back to you later.

Pip

Thank you for the picture of the Serial Number. I will add the frame to the List when I next update it.

Err, I see no stuck Seat Post in the pictures that you have posted, so is there a section of Post stuck inside the frame that we can't see? It looks that this may be the case in that first shot, which will make the task more challenging.

There are some very comprehensive threads on this site regarding removable of a stuck Seat Post, that begin with more gentle frame saving methods, though to resorting to something more brutal that can damage the paint work. With the lovely paint on that frame, please do proceed with caution, and avoid the Caustic Soda method if you can. There are some YouTube videos demonstrating this method if you want to see what it can do to a frame!

Perhaps you could start your own thread in the Retro MTB Chat section with regards to removing the remaining part of the Seat Post, and maybe the Reader's MTBs --> 1997 section for the potential build.

I would think it entirely possible to vertically hacksaw down through the remaining sections of Post and prise it out.

He already tried that, but he thinks its chemically bonded to the frame
