His friendship is the greatest legacy he leaves us with but we must not forget the incredible resources and knowledge that he documented locally and shared here on retrobike, not least the Kona serial numbers and related information.

From today, I will administer the work he started. My current plan is to spend an hour a week updating the lists with any new entries or confirmed related data / information. The same criteria applies as before, so if you'd like to have your Kona Hot added to the list, please follow these steps before PMing with your details or questions:

1. Must be a Kona Hot
2. Have an eligible serial number, found on the bottom of the bottom bracket
3. Provide photographic evidence, preferably as the current owner
4. Check the bike and serial number isn't already on the current list (note if the record was unconfirmed previously, new details are welcome)

Kona Hot Frame Serial Numbers:

1991-1995 Tom Teesdale: West Branch, Iowa, Idaho.
The 1991 – 1995 frames are made from various mixes of Tange Prestige Concept, Tange Ultimate / Ultrastrong, Tange Ultimate / Superlight and Tange Ultimate / Ultralight.
Dropouts from ’91 – ‘93 with triangle hole.
Dropouts from '94 & ’95 have no triangle hole.
Serial Number format: TET# - TET####.

1996 & 1997 Altitude Cycle Technologies: Chico. California.
The 1996 & 1997 frames are made from Reynolds 853 Butted Main Tubes, and rumoured to have 725 Stays.
Dropouts on some early 1996 Altitude Hot frames have a similar flat design to the later TET frames - these frames have one Rear Brake Cable Stop at the front of the Top Tube & require a Dog Collar, with Down Tube routing for the Front and Rear Mech.
The later 1996 Hot frames have Goathead Investment Cast Dropouts – these frames have two Rear Brake Cable Stops on the Top Tube, with Down Tube routing for Front and Rear Mech.
Serial Number format 1996 frames - HT### & HT0### (currently with one exception).

The 1997 frames also have Goathead Investment Cast Dropouts, but with two double Cable Stops on the Top Tube at the front and the rear for the Front Mech and Rear Brake, with Down Tube routing for the Rear Mech.
Serial Number format 1997 frames - H096MM###.

1998 Enigma Design & Manufacturing: U.S.A. & Hodaka: Taiwan (built in ‘99).
The 1998 Enigma Hots are allegedly manufactured entirely from 853 Reynold tubing including the Stays. They have an Opposite Oval Downtube and lack the Bridge across the Chain Stays, similar to all Kona Ku frames.
Dropouts are the New (Dew) Drop Investment Cast “K” style.
Serial Number format: KH7M### & KH8M###.

The 1998 Hodaka built Hot rolled over into 1999. They have Rack Eyelets on the Seat Stays, and a Chain Stay Bridge. These also have the Opposite Oval Downtube, and may be all 853 tubing similar to the Enigma built Hot.
Dropouts are the New Drop Investment Cast “K” style.
Serial Number format: H9N1 ###.

Rightyho, I have updated the Serial Number List with the addition of another frame. This came from a new member via a Private Message to me. Out of respect I won’t reveal which frame it is, just in case they would prefer to keep the Serial Number private - let’s not get into a discussion here why that matters to some people .

Please do keep the Private Messages coming with any new additions for the list, or if anyone would like to discuss the year of a frame currently documented.

I have updated the Hot Serial Number list again with a few additions, and a couple of edits.

We now have what appears to be another 1994 Factory Team frame. I only have a few pictures of these frames, some of which are poor quality, but they were painted in either Orange or Yellow to Orange fade. I’m unable to currently locate where I read that these ‘94 frames were painted up for use by the Team riders, but I assume they were for the girls, as they are 17” frames.

I have pictures of Cindy Devine riding an early 17” Hei Hei, and Lesley Tomlinson riding a 17” 1995 Hei Hei, which is painted in the Rasta Green / Yellow Flame. I do think however that all of the girls rode 17” frames, including Trish Sinclair and Leslie Greene.

Does anyone have any information on these 1994 Orange or Yellow/Orange fade Hot Team frames?

The edits on the list are with regards to a couple of “1995” frames. I’m struggling to decide what year they actually are. Before I published this list, I asked in Retro MTB Chat if anyone knew what year to serial number Tom Teesdale’s frames are. I can only assume that he serialised his frames sequentially as he produced them. It appears to me that if a frame hadn’t sold in the year for which it was produced, it ended up with the following years’ livery, regardless of any tubing changes specified for that following year.

The most stark example is a Tom Teesdale 14” 1995 Tange frame TET 1882 that ended up with 1996 Livery. The 1996 frames of course were built from Reynolds 853 by Altitude.

Anyway, I have documented a couple of 20” frames as 1994 (numerically) but with 1995 Decals. The catalogue Spec. lists the same tubing for both years. There is also another high profile frame that sits in the same category, but I’ll leave that for the owner (or anyone else) to object to how it is now listed!

Ah yes, oops and apologies Mark! ; that does sound like I'm calling you a girl for riding a 17" frame. It would have been better if I had written it the other way round and said that the likes of Dario Cioni, Steve Peat, Roland Green & Ryder Hesjedal all rode 20", so those frames couldn't have been ridden by those boys!

....and thank you for the praise. Sándor asked me the other day how long did this take; what with the Titanium and the Ku Lists. I said that it gave me something to do while I was convalescing .

Talking of '94/'95 transition.....

I have tweaked the list again in order to accommodate the dating of the 1994/5 Tom Teesdale frames.

The U.S. and U.K. 1994 Catalogues show both the Kona Downtube Decal, and frame's model Top Tube Decal with Block font in Sliver across all models.

The Gold colour Decals with the same font were not available until the 1995 Catalogue was published, but only on some models - Hei Hei, Explosif, Kula, Cinder Cone Lava Dome etc., but surprisingly not the Hot :roll: :

The Top Tube Kona Custom Decal is where the main difference occurs between the two years:

1994: Block “KONA” & “CUSTOM” c/w Oval “K” in between.

I have therefore documented the TET frames in numeric order, and added some detail regarding the style of Decal on those that are 1994/5 transition. I believe that the tubing was identical for both years.
