Kona Explosif

Hi,

I am considering purchasing this Kona Explosif. A lot of the original parts have been replaced, indicating the bike has been through a lot of wear, and is indeed very rusty.

What year do you recon this is? Do you think this was an Explosif, or possibly an Explosif Pro?

Finally, what frame size do you recon this is?

Thank you

Alan

yeah, most parts are a write off.....frame and fork do not look that bad from a corrosion point of view. but I'm expecting the bike to need a total stripping and re-spray....looking as to how worth while it is to go through this as opposed to wait till i find a better conditioned one that does not need the paint

The only differences between an Explosif and Explosif Pro were the components and colour (black) but even the colour was a red herring because you could have any 1992 Kona model in black

Id take a gamble at that. The frame and fork once painted would be worth decent money and you may salvage some extra bits

That garden might have been facing the English Channel by the looks of it - poor thing. If you've got lots of juicy parts for it and it's cheap buy it! Strip it, black's easy to colour match, decals, 2K lacquer in a can - job's a good un! (This is what I was going to do to my Explosif 2 summers ago but still haven't got round to doing yet!) If you're motivated and want a Kona project go for it?!
Mine was £210 a few years ago - just the F&F - a bit of covid tax, but it's a bigger one and it's the year I lusted after. It'd have to be considerably cheaper than this I'd have thought

The frame paint doesn't seem so bad - it's the rest that's caught the weather. I'd want more close-up shots around the BB area for a start, assurance the seatpost and stem move and they could cheapen it postage-wise if they tossed half of it away - not sure about those wheels or cranks. Most of it seems just to make it look like a complete bike. Ask on the forum if someone's got something better for sale?
