Need some help.

Got a Klein Rascal, bought of Ebay 12 months ago. Been built up once but the BB spindle is too wide and I need to replace it.

Trouble is - how do i get the old BB out? I'm used to threaded BB's so need some help.

They are sealed cartridges, press fit and glued in.....possible to do at home but you will need the correct kit to do a good job.....it's the one job I leave to my lbs!.....good luck!.... :D

Thanks for the reply. However, i'd like to try myself (learn by doing and all that!)

question is, how do I get it out. Don't need to keep the BB, as i'll buy a new one but no idea how to start with this.

If i "butcher" (!!) the BB its not a problem but I don't want to knacker the frame!

any help or links to forums on how to get the thing out are appreciated

cheers.

If my name was "Wrecker" and I got advice like the above, I'd be off to the LBS

Contstructive comments also welcomed in how to get the danmed BB off

screw on a crank bolt onto the spindle and knock with a hammer, the spindle should come out and sometimes the bearings too.

BTW - if thats a 113mm spindle your changing i would take it off our hands ;)

Its 2 sealed cartridge bearings sandwiching the axle and pressed directly into the frame. Removal is simple, refitting less so without correct tools. To remove, just hit one side of the axle with a soft faced hammer, it should come out along with the bearing on the opposite side which you can now remove. The bearing on the side you hit it from will hopefully remain in place rather than being driven further into the shell.
Theoretically you should be able to drift the new axle into the bearing in the frame then tap the other one back over the axle/into the frame. As I fount many years ago, what will probably happen is that the axle will force the bearing in the frame out as it goes in. I used a combinantion of huge g clamps, bits of pine, sockets and swearing. There is a diagram of a homemade tool on here somewhere which should make it a lot easier.
For what it's worth my LBS weren't too keen on doing the job recently, in fact they weren't aware that type of bb fitment existed!

I agree. There's a specific tool but hard to be found. The hammer is the better solution with care (screwing a crank bolt onto the spindle…)

i had my headset and bb replaced......john atkins cycles in leamington spa....(2 or 3 extra bus journeys for you wrecker..... ) have all the kit and a klein trained mechanic for those interested......only one in the country and responsible for passing on that expertise to trek uk i was told.....
