keeping chrome looking good on a commuter

Is there a lazy person's way of keeping chrome (all the stays and forks) looking good while using the bike for a commuter?

If so what is the secret.

thanks

Ive been thinking of how to do the same. Maby some sort of polish. Or i thought about rubbing the parts with oil on a rag

Try to avoid using too much chrome or metal polish. After a couple of times the chrome will fade. Wax is indeed a better solution.

ive got a full chrome bike to do so thanks for the tip. going to strip clean an wax it up for next summer

I polished mine at first, but a few winters of grime and salt started to really visibly attack my bikes. Now I prefer to wipe them over with an oily rag because it stops the damp getting to it and deteriorating it further.

The chrome isn't the problem........it's the metal underneath which "rusts". You need to exclude water and oxygen so covering with a layer of wax / oil / vaseline will do the job as good as anything. You could always use a regular spray of something which disperses water (water dispersant) which after 40 attempts was called water dispersant number 40 :)

Thats a great idea as my DS is not as bad as my NDS.

Another thing is ACF 50 but all the crap sticks to it so the bike looks quite mucky.

I use the oily rags I build engines and stuff with, so it's usually a mix of engine oil and grease :D

It's great for protecting the paint too and stops a frame with a bit of patina turning into a horrible rusty mess :D
