Old Ned
Old School Grand Master
Sorry to have to inform members that Johnny Mapplebeck, the founder of Pennine Cycles (initially Whittaker and Mapplebeck), sadly passed away recently at his home in Canada. He was 101 years old! He moved to Canada about 20 years ago to be near his daughter Barbara (who was a British international BITD). He was a very handy road racer himself in his youth and, I believe rode as a veteran in the late 80's/early 90's.
I have also been told that Tom Oldfield, who rode in the 50's for Viking Cycles and, more recently (90's) with Huddersfield RCC in veterans Time Trials has also passed away. He lived in Mirfield, a place well known for his good friend Brian Robinson, Albert Hitchen and Lisa Brambani.
RIP Johnny and Tom and condolences to their families.
Edit - it appears that Tom passed away last May. The jungle drums obviously working a bit slow in these parts......
