Jockey wheels

So what's the thing with jockey wheels, 10 tooth or 11 tooth my mech has 10 but need replacing, but only finding 11.

10 appear to be shimano 8 speed
11 appear to be nine,

Would there be a problem using 11 on a 10 mech.
I know its the top jockey wheel is the jockey that lines up the gears, and bottom wheel merely a form of tensioner.

Opinions please

I Would of thought the tooth size of the cassette is more a factor than how many speeds your mech has. After all you dont want your chain too close to the bottom of the cassette because the derailleur has a tendency to spring forward, when riding over bumps and off kerbs and what not.

I dont know that for certain but it seems logical



I tried to put a larger wheel on my xt mech and it kept locking up and i couldnt backpedal either. The mech in question is an 8 speed but its the same principle

I have swapped 11T into mechs that has 10T and had no problems.

I think top wheel would be more issue that bottom. As above, I'm assuming that more teeth means bigger wheel so a bigger top wheel would mean the chain runs closer to the cassette. Whether that's a problem or not I guess depends on the particular build. Bottom wheel just runs the chain through the cage so as long as it fits it shouldn't be a problem.

Is there a difference in width? are 9sp chains narrower and so the jockey wheels narrower too? Just a thought. I dont think I have ever had a problem with 8sp /9sp compatibility but...
