Re:

don't get your pants in a twist, the film name is not really an issue, your Gunnery quote is a different thing because the word is used as an derogatory insult within the quote.

i am far from the PC police myself but don't turn this into more than it needs to be.

I see some right crap going through the forum and insults thrown about willy nilly because we are just piss taking each other, but this!!!!

Someone delete my post  The next time I see offending jokes on here, I'm dialling 999 and getting the OP arrested

No don't delete it.

We should be able to communicate our opinions without insulting those who differ, I have never insulted anyone who differs and have found allys on here with vastly differing opinions because of that never insult anyone.

Lets end this on a high shall we :)

Re:

Stewart Lee made an excellent contribution to this issue.

Might be available around the net somewhere, as not on iPlayer anymore.

Perhaps here...

Worth sticking with it, even if you don't appreciate Lee's style.

On a personal note, I have been at the coal face of this whole issue for many years. I have had many black days living through the trouble being in a 'mixed' relationship, including being subject to threats on my life and extreme violence.

I don't hanker after the days when people could openly use expressions like the N word in a pejorative way.

Besides, when exactly were these times?

I am amongst the older posters on here, and as long as I have remembered the civil rights movement was well under way and comics like Bernard Manning were considered archaic, though I loved him because he was actually funny rather than merely offensive.

Of course it is not racist to discuss the use of the N word and refer to the time when it was not so divisive. Someone will come along in a minute and start talking about how rappers use the word, blah, blah, blah..

I think Clarkson, had he genuinely reflected upon seeing the take in which he 'clearly' mumbled it, should have decided it just wasn't necessary to even dance around the expression.

I would say so to his face.

I doubt very much that there was a team member amongst the film crew there who could have had that term applied to them in the sense it is used most hatefully, but of course Clarkson would never have expressed himself that way were there anyone in the vicinity who might challenge him.

Add coward to the list of traits most admired in the man then.

Re: Jeremy 'Bigot' Clarkson

I think this discussion would go a bit differently if we were sat in the pub talking about it.
Somehow when sat at a computer, certain people become so uncivilised.
I assume most of us are mature adults, so let's start acting like mature adults.
I also hated it when they changed the ending to return of the Jedi.
Just like the dam busters they should leave it well alone.
Take care retrobikers, have a great bank holiday weekend.

There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about...................

Is HF the new Max Clifford?

Very cunning.

It's not racist to use the word per se. I wouldn't defend doing a John Terry but I'd defend anyone using it in the context of this debate.

As for Stewart Lee, I can't stomach more than five seconds of the smug twat never mind half an hour.

And add strawman to yours. And lets have a pro black film crew quota at the BBC while we're at it. Lenny Henry isn't on TV much (thank ****), maybe he'd like a go on a camera?

Re: Jeremy 'Bigot' Clarkson

Evening all,

Very interesting thread. I am very well tuned into language which is racist, sexist, ageist etc etc etc The days are gone when you can say what you want, everyone knows what is racist, the other terms are a little more difficult to spot. Examples -
Manpower (bad) - staff levels
He/she (bad) - they
Manhole cover (bad) - personal access cover

Some is right minded, some not - the list of terms is endless and growing. Can you be classed as sexist for saying 'manpower'? (the answer is yes)

Re Clarkson - i used to like him and Top Gear as it was funny and i like cars but it too contrived now and although i like the cars, i think it is past it's sell-by date a bit. Jeremy is a figure who promotes controversy and that attracts people - viewing figures are high for the programme (if not astronomical).

The country, as a whole, has gone mad and everyone is able to take offence - sometimes rightly so but mostly wrongly. Had Jeremy said some clear statement about the holocaust being great or similar and had he been wearing a Nazi uniform and had he been an active member of a right wing party - maybe, and only maybe, the complaints would be justified. The rhyme he used was in use when i was at primary school and i think that i could fall into the trap of saying it - but at what cost? An accident, what should the penalty be? Loss of job? Criminal conviction? I know the word is not correct in any circumstances - but, i hear it being used by younger black males when the talk to each other - that confuses me - it is either acceptable or not within one country.

Acceptable language is a minefield and Jeremy only entered it is a minuscule way - so, was it done for publicity? Hmmmmmm ........

As far as the mods go, this is difficult to police. I got a new car last month - it is a black Audi A6 - should i say non-white? Or list every colour except black and say it is the one missing from the list? I feel that if an insult is directed directly at an individual or group, then it should be queried - but definitions of insults need to be worked out - a minefield!!!!!!!!!

Have a great weekend everyone (all-inclusive),

Richard

p.s. i re-read the above before posting and i notice a mistake and Mr Raleigh mentioned the dog's name - current life cannot change history - as unpalatebale as the name may be now -it is fact and seems unfortunate to me.

What a crock of shit. I'd love to know the number and proportion of women in the history of manholes who have been employed to get down them.

It's a manhole. Therefore it's a manhole cover.
