Has anybody heard of a bike made by Jack Baguley, the style of it suggest it's from the seventies. The transfer on the headset says 'Jack Baguley 48 Crossway Stoke Newington N16' the seat tube 'HHCC Lightweight' Any ideas?

I was around in the 70's and making pitiful headway into winning time trials, road races and kermess's :)

Any pics ?

Shaun

Hmm... lugs look a bit too fancy for the late 70's when prugnat style lugs were popular, the cable guide and braze on's put it earlier too.

Looks like a bike bought in and stickered up for a now defunct bike shop...

Mystery to me, sorry.

Shaun

Jack Baguley had a shop at that address and used to advertise in 'Cycling' regularly in the 70's (and possibly 60's). However, I doubt if he actually built frames but probably bought them in from one or several of the numerous trade builders around the London area at that time. Interesting find though, I don't think I've seen one before. Try and keep the original patina finish if you can.

The cable stops rather than guides for the rear mech cables indicate 60's to me as do the Nervex pro lugs.

I've been looking through some old 'Cycling (and Mopeds)' magazines (actually looking for the 'Toledo' road test issue) and seen adverts in the 'small ads' section from at least 1958 to early 70's. The early ones only have tubulars on offer but later there are wheels etc. as well.

Hi! New member, just enrolled today. May be a bit late but have just seen the Jack Baguley notes. Have recently resurrected my 1959 E.G.Bates and am riding again. Found a Jack Baguley undated price list (13 pages of frames and equipment) amongst my paperwork; seems to be from 1959 ('JB' made a couple of hand-written notes indicating certain price increases effective 1:6:59). No illustrations as the list is simply typed out but it shows 'Jack Baguley, Racing Cycle Specialist' at the Crossway address. If you want a copy, let me know.

Hi,
Jack Baguley was my uncle and I remember clearly the shop and he made all his own bikes and he was very busy making them in the 1950's and 1960's he sadly died in 1973 .

Looks a lot like my Youngs (of Lewisham) Marksman, 1960, 531 throughout and Nervex Professional lugs as Ned has mentioned.

There is a mention of Jack on Classic Lightweights, confirms the address and that it was a one roomed shop, but no mention of his frames.

The Stoke Newington location is usually associated with Paris. I've not heard of Baguley: suspect (again Ned might be right) frames were bought in from trade builder.

Nice frameset nonetheless.

Jon.
