It's not all bad news

Re:

I would like every free press in the world to carry a 'copy' of the new edition, but the fact is these crazed individuals have achieved their goals in some respects. Cartoonists have been at the forefront of political struggles over the centuries, and are often the first to be assassinated, imprisoned or forced into exile. The concept of freedom of expression is severely compromised.

It was interesting to listen to Will Self on C4 news last night - his point was freedom of speech is important, but we shouldn't assume that means we can offend anyone we want to. At what point does satire become offensive for the sake of it?

Re:

I think this is where it gets very complicated.

Yes, the internet has underlined the global nature of all things, but we are still individuals living in individual, independent regions and countries.

No one moral arbiter should dictate across all societies. Whether that be a superpower government or religious ideology.

I am sure Self would argue that, whether one intended to offend or not, at no point should one be on the receiving end of physical violence in response.

I find it interesting that the hacker group Anonymous have said they will respond to the terrorist threat to ensure free speech.

Sounds like they plan to prevent one groups free speech to protect it for the rest of us.

Will they disrupt systems that terrorists use for communications where governments would rather listen, and will that be more effective at preventing collaboration?

Will it effect us the common people?

I don't actually see why they would announce such a plan! Rather like I don't like us giving the animals a heads up when we are pulling out of war zones. It also begs the question, given how long these terrorists have been at it, why on earth are the self confessed super hackers not already pulling them to pieces?
