Is this Columbus Max?

Been looking for a Columbus Max bike to come my way for some time. This one here is said to be one, but it does not look as ovalised as other Max frames I've seen. (The fork on this one certainly seems to be something else) Is it just the viewing angle?

Found another Mazza Team 94 on the web, and it looks more ovalised, and has the Max fork as well

agree - Max is also very difficult to use with lugs. More likely Max would be used on welded frame designs.

Re:

hi nice frame, race number hanger too ;) there is a thread going on here.ive looked at a few max frames lately and i reckon it would be fun comparing one to my lemond glx.
as far as i have been able to see and don't know for sure yet if tubes change orientation
one end to the other. bb / d tube is ovalised just like on my modern ally. d tube /h tube ? prob round
t/tube this looks oval too,and looks to taper bigger at top tube/ htube.
i have only seen lugged mxl's ,what i believe to be its type of counter part moser ax leader is silver brazed, and i really love the forks on them.super aero at the top.

Re:

Certainly not MAX :(

There are lugs available for MAX, but they're very distinctive (and heavy):

Most likely that's SLX or such for '94...could be one of the flashier Nivacrom sets, though (EL, EL OS, Genius, Cyber etc).

All the best,

Re:

Cheers guys. Was thinking too that it might have been a custom bike, possibly for a sponsored rider, made of lighter tubing. The number holder indicates it's not an off the peg one.

The image is straight from ebay as you might have though. (No affiliation with seller)

I think it's genuine belonging to Golay...there's a name in the faded paint in the pics (with a bit of colour balance tweaking) as well as the new name:

Golay:

Sylv...

All the best,

All the best,

Great detective work!

Re:

One more MAX question. The Merckx seems to have the (viewed from side) flatter top tube part on the front, the Battaglin facing rear. What's the deal here, which is better?

(Both images from Ebay)
