Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI)
1. Paint on a strong dye liquid (usually deep red).
2. Leave the dye to penetrate any cracks that may be present.
3. Wipe off the dye as thoroughly as possible using paper towels and solvent.
4, Spray white paint over the location.
5. If a crack is present the dye will bleed out of the crack and into the white paint.

This is one of a few methods used in the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries to detect cracks on safety critical parts.

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)
1. Apply a strong electromagnet across a suspected crack.
2. Puff some fine, brightly-coloured magnetic powder over the suspected crack.
3. If a crack is present there will be miniature north and south poles on the crack edges that will attract the magnetic powder.
4. The crack, if present, will show up as whatever colour the magnetic powder is.

A long time ago I took a steel bike frame to one of the workshops at work, and asked them to have a look at an area of wrinkled paint. They used this method and found the crack in just a few seconds.

Same as for DPI, it's used in safety critical industries.

There are other methods too, such as ultrasonic and x-ray. They all have different applications. For example, MPI only works on steel components.
