V's and pedals flat /SPD combo pedals dont strike me as too BMX-like.
To be honest I wasn't paying much attention at the time, but Shimano always used DX (as distinct from Deore DX) for its BMX parts. The DX hubs that shared the red and black colour scheme with the V-brakes were certainly BMX oriented - singlespeed, 10mm nutted axles front and rear, and 110mm OLN.Designed for the rigors of BMX as well as off-road racers.
