For most people, for most of the time, it's true that the trivia of their searches and conversations doesn't really matter to the tech companies or the government. However, there are instances where the information picked up and used to feed adverts does matter. If you are the victim of domestic abuse and do some searching for help, or have what you think is a confidential phone call, and your abusive partner sees that you're starting to get adverts from related charities, it could be the difference between a beating or escape. As a general rule, the data collected might not matter much, but, obviously, a general rule is not a universal rule.
