iPhone question?

My niece is looking to get a 2nd hand 3GS to use with her current pay as you go sim (either unblocking etc). My question is will the phone fully function as it should? Will she have all the facilities such a contract phone will have? She already has a iTunes account.

Hi Daj,

A second hand iphone will have all the functionality of a first hand contract phone, yes. The phone will need to be unlocked if it is tied to a network, but the seller can get the handset unlocked through their network (takes around two days, iphones are unlocked in an odd way).

If you use a pay as you go sim, though, look out for the data charges when browsing the web, downloading apps and generally using the phone outside of a wi-fi network, they add up quick.

I'm pretty sure that only the iphone4 takes the micro sim, the 3g and 3gs take the regular sim... my old 3g sim slotted right into my galaxy sII which takes normal sim cards.

Correct - Only the iPhone 4 (and disappointing 4S) take Micro SIMs. The rest take a standard sized sim card.

Yeah - whats the deal with Apples latest phone? When Tim Cook 'revealed' the new 4S, the ony improvements seemed to be the dual core A5 chipset and updated camera??

Did they increase the virtual memory on them as well? As far as I can tell, they have simply brought the 4S up to the same spec as my Galaxy SII??!!!

A bit of a let down if you ask me.

Are you genuinely disappointed with the iPhone 4s.

I personally am not. The 4 is a damned fine platform, adding 1080p improving the camera and jamming a dual core processor into the package whilst improving battery statistics to match all in a phone sized package, dissapointed isn't the word I'd choose.

Sure we all love shiny things but the 4 chasis is still a shiny thing if it's fashion you want, there are plenty of fashion phone manufacturers. If it's a powerful intuitive mobile device you're after then don't discount the 4s out of hand.

I mean honestly would you of been more or less dissapointed if it looked all new but offered no tech advantage?

I think that the main 'dissapointment', to use the same word, is that people may well have been expecting some more exotic additions, thats all.

I say its a let down in a sense that the iPhone 5 rumour mill has been churning for a while now, with 'leaks' of new tech that was allegedly to be introduced, near field technology being one. I cant help but but wonder whether Apple have plumped for form over function, but when they do release the 5, it may well have a new chassis, much like the move from 3 to 4. If you want a powerful and versatile smart phone, the Android handsets, speaking as an former iPhone fan, are better.

Now, I am sure that we can all appreciate that these supposed leaks are all rumour and speculation, but it does build up the hype. It should be more impressive when Apple do release the iPhone 5 though, I really hope they finally put a bigger screen on it!!

As it is, there's no denying that the 4S a good phone. But many 'regular' phone users won't notice or need the improvement in performance that the A5 chipset brings over the A4. Those that would benefit from the tech have probably already gone and got themselves an Android handset which already has it.

You could almost hear the groans and sighs when Apple unveiled it yesterday.

The Siri integration is interesting, and is probably the one thing which is making me think about selling my 4 to get one (definitely more out of curiosity than need). But then, Siri was already available for iPhones (there was an App in the App Store). Funnily enough, the App has now gone and before long, Siri will no longer work with anything but the 4S. Windows Mango has a very similar (and by all accounts equally as impressive) voice recognition platform too.

It'll still sell by the bucketload. Apple could put a s**t on a stick and sell it as an iT*rd, and people would queue up to buy one.
