IG chain on HG cassette

Hi all,

just replaced the cassette on my Bear Valley SE with a HG 7 speed part, and the chain with an IG 51. I thought the two would be compatible but the chain seems too wide.

I guess I need a narrow chain, but I'm currently running an STX RC chainset which has a sticker that notes only to use an IG chain.

Any suggestions on which chain would fit best? I'm thinking of fitting a Deore LX chainset to complete the group, maybe I should get that done before going any further?

Cheers :)

A 7 speed chain should fit without issue. Any 6/7/8 speed chain should be compatible with any 7 speed gear set. All these chains are 1/2" x3/32". It is one of the things that is actually standarised in the bicylcle industry.I am not that sure on all the difference between shimano HG and IG chains but there is an IG narrow chain. I persoanly don't shimano chains.

Why not use a KMC or Sram chain? I have never had compability issues using these chains which is why I stick to using them. KMC make shimano chains but to a lower spec.

The plot thickens!

Thanks for the replies gents.

Don't think I'm missing a spacer, I replaced the cassette on my other bike fairly recently without trouble and am sure it had the same parts.

I've measured the chain compared to my other 7spd bike and its the same. I'll measure the gaps between the rings on the cassettes next - couldn't do it tonight as it means moving the (loud) car out of the garage to get a bike off the wall.

Will let you know whats what :)

There should be a thin slotted spacer between the next-to-bottom sprocket and the one above it. If that's missing, it'd have the symptoms you are describing in THAT gear, but no others.

dbmbt - you're spot on. What an idiot I am, only saw the problem in one gear and assumed the fault was with all gears. Realised I didn't get a spacer with this cassette but have one in my parts box I can fit.

Thanks for the help :D
