If you started from scratch again...

I don't think I could as all the bikes I currently own are part of the journey and without them I would not be where I am now!
I was wanting to sell at least my '99 GT Tequesta and my '98 Tempest but I am reluctant to do so now

I think some of these answers are very dependant on what your motivations are for building retro bikes; are you building something you would have liked in the day to actually ride (or just collect), or for reliving memories of something you did actually have (or never got rid of)? There are a few old ones I'd like to add (well, one, a Mk3 V10), but mostly I'm content with what I've got. The only likely addition is to be of a lighter built long travel modern bike for bigger (100km+) mountain days.

As a man who can put his hands up and admit to having an addictive personality I'd steer clear. I recently sold my entire collection as some of you may know and I feel much better. I myself ended up with maybe 10 or so bikes, all of which needed completing in some way. It bacame quite tiring and I burned out. I kept three bikes, two Explosifs and a modern Trek Full Suss, which I will never use. Life has taken me away from the hobby sadly. I had a good run having started in 1988 :) One Explosif is built as my single speed work bike with the other being in bit's in the loft. The Trek will no doubt be sold, I bought it to get me back out on the trail but I doubt that will happen.

Next I need to compile and sell all of my touring kit. I have racks, camping equipment, tent, two sets of Ortlieb panniers etc etc

I'm still here but not active ;-)

I got in to the hobby a few years back and basically bought anything and everything I could find for the fun of stripping them down and rebuilding them before selling them on.
As I got more experienced I began to focus more on bikes that were decent quality and that I enjoyed riding (and looking at).
In the last year or so bikes have become harder to sell on, I was mostly making a small profit or breaking even on builds before, now it’s typically better to split bikes up rather than build them. That doesn’t bring me any pleasure at all really.
I resolved to focus more on riding and less on building and sold off most of my completed bikes (generally at a loss - but no hard feelings, I had my fun out of them).
I now have what I consider the perfect mix:
Modern hardtail xc bike
Modern full sus enduro
2x 80’s atb’s (one posh one, one with mudguards and panniers for utility)
Rigid 90’s xc bike
Hardtail 90’s xc bike
Cruiser bike for summer posing(!)
Oh and a 50’s road bike (mostly as wall art)
Great thread by the way, I’ve enjoyed reading people’s replies. 👍

I’d still have a modern Road and gravel bike for sure. Just not sure I’d bother going down the retro worm hole again
A worm hole is a very good description.

My situation is that I've barely ridden a bike since lockdown. Lockdown cycling was amazing though.

I do use zwift regularly and find it quite immersive (don't hate me) and I seem to enjoy walking to cycling these days for some outdoors peace and tranquility.

So I have all these bikes and bits of bikes that are just gathering dust and are difficult to sell at the moment. The thing is, they weigh on the mind as unfinished projects so I would love to be free of all the bike and mental clutter and start again.
