I just want a bike that does the job, works as it should, i can have no sentimentality with, run it into the ground, throw it away and then buy another one.

And keep the retro bike for when it matters

The crank is a cnc job. one piece and a horrible idea as one worn outr ring spelled the end for the whole thing but really nice to look at just the same

400 quid for a good trail bike is doable provided ...

- you build it yourself
- rigid fork and frame
- 1 x8 or 1x9 drive train.
- luck into a few deals
- sprinkle a bit of good used kit in there.

That said. I'd buy a good used bike like a Kona unit, add in some rear gearing and have some fun.

Seconded on the Pinnacle Ramin One, it's a cracking deal for the money. Also have a look at the Vitus Dee range from Chain Reaction, and whatever run-out bikes Paul's Cycles have on offer.

We are allowed up to 1k here.

If you can stretch to £500 it opens up a lot more opportunities.
And with the release of "next years" bikes there are lots of sales On at the moment.
I would avoid Evans if at all possible.
