Cyclists and pedestrians have priority in roundabouts here but they still drive like we don't, I often get off the bike. One time we were in the roundabout, guy doesn't stop for me. I got out in front of him and stare him down while doing rude hand gestures, I then continue, as my better half follows, for him to do the same thing to her.No red lights out here. Only roundabouts, where cars have priority, which is *%$#@! frustrating, especially when they linger while looking for a space on the roundabout, blocking my way. Only one roundabout gives priority to cyclists and pedestrians, and after a few months of adjusting, it is perfect. This is the way it should be everywhere. Very nice to see the stream of cars slowing down to a crawl.
I was afraid it was going to be like that, but usually people stop here. Now and again someone doesn't, but it is rareCyclists and pedestrians have priority in roundabouts here but they still drive like we don't, I often get off the bike. More pedestrians get killed by car driver than people on bikes get killed by car drivers.I always stop at red lights because the big metal thingies are bigger than me and in a world where people unjustly hate pedalling road users, I'd prefer not to give them anymore reason to be careless round us. I even get off the bike and walk in heavy traffic areas because they seem more tuned in to not mowing down a fat walking man than a fat cycling man
I'm not talking statistics, I'm sure that is the case (that more pedestrians are killed), but anecdotally, in Denmark, in my neck of the woods I feel far safer walking than cycling in traffic heavy areas. Keep in mind I spend 90 percent of my time in low traffic areas, country roads primarily, where I feel safe. Urban areas I would prefer to walk.More pedestrians get killed by car driver than people on bikes get killed by car drivers.
So stay on the bike...
At least in the UK.
