Definitely 1989, same year of the intoduction of 21 speed MTB groupsets I believe! The bike I bought was also spec'd with Biopace HP rings and the '89 specific Mountain LX groupset. It the year I bought my first MTB so I spent a LOT of time in bike shops and looking at catalogues!
