Bought a 2nd bike form flebay for the gf and upon on arrival (it was packed pretty well) the chain is like this?

Looking at the original pictures the chain is fine. I can't for the life of me get the chain to be the right way around :(

Thanks.

Make the circular part bigger and then you'll figure the rest out of why it's looped.

far too much grease/oil on that chain.

I has the same happen once with a chain and had to get Mark to untangle it.... but you know it can be done, just a matter of unlooping parts then eventually it will all become clear. if there is a quick link, then remove that as it will save a lot of time and aggro.

I had a chain do that to me in transit to the states a few years back, for the life of me I couldnt work out how it looped itself like that! in the end I had to split it to get it sorted, I think the tsa guy did it as a joke when they checked my bags

I would know that swingarm anywhere! Marin full suss, 99, maybe 98.
Anyway, you are in luck. If you don't have the ciain tool as described above, and I'm guessing not or you wouldn't be asking the question, remove the lower (when it's the right way up) jockey wheel from the rear mech and the little screw which holds the two halves of the front mech cage together (most, but not all mechs have this)
The chain will then come off the bike intact, much easier to sort it out, and degrease it, off the bike. Make the big loop bigger and the rest should become obvious. You can't do this on a bike where the chain loops around the chainstay, like on most hardtails and some full susses but your Marin is perfect.
