How much do you trust an old bike

Only time I've ever spent a lot of money on an old seat post was for a lovely Syncros. Out in winter on a ride organised on here and it snapped, leaving me to stand up from Malham Tarn to Malham village and then miss the rest of the ride. Never spent loads on retro kit I intend to use since.
All my kit i mentioned came from deals I've hunted on full bikes that I've stripped for parts :p Possibly worse given I have no history on the items XD XD

i wouldn't trust old carbon bars. Otherwise no problem. It does depend on how you ride as well. I know the red & blue route well and they are putting loads of sand down and smoothing out the rough parts. Soon it will be a road bike smooth trails. Odd as lots ride big wheels with full suspension.

...and plenty ride e-bikes. F***king e-bikes in Swinley - nothing over there that needs granny ring let alone a bloody Bosch motor!

Honestly never questioned if I trust an old bike or not until I saw this video last week

skip to 11:20 for the good bit. I own 5 Dyna-Tech bikes and it’s making me think twice about continuing to ride them!

*My steel bikes I’m happy to go wherever and however just made me stop and think about the bonded frames I have.

Did any mass bike manufacturer still expect their MTBs to be ridden hard for 30+ years on the trails available back then, never mind the ones nowadays? I doubt it. Did they warranty them to do the same? Even more doubtful.

That said, I am having a ton of fun on a hardtail which while modern shares some of the characteristics of older frames - and enjoying it more than my modern full sus. There's a certain amount of fun to be had out of being underbiked.

Thats where I am right now - I only bought the Scott because it was too good to pass up. Never expected to really enjoy riding it, even if my (almost) 50 y/o wrists punish me afterwards.

As long as the bike has been well maintained I trust it to continue to perform as designed - particularly the mid level steel and aluminum ones. When you start getting into the super lightweight racing stuff then maybe not so much, but I still bash about on my old Cindercone and Zaskar.

Did have a couple of moments riding my Delta V (which was 25 years old when I had it) where I thought about the old “Crack n fail” reputation Csnnondale had back in the day. Never put me off though.
