How many is too many? How do you warrant them all?

There was a time not so long ago, just before I was pointed to this site ;) That I was going to just have one bike  Since being on here I now have

1990 Klein Attitude Dolomite

But at the end of the day, you can never have too much of a good thing

Without boring specifics:

1991 "proper" retro (catalogue spec except tyres/shifters/brake levers)
1993 "everyday" retro (random parts, child seat, tows trailer)
1995 singlespeed (retro-flavoured modernish parts, if that makes sense)
1995 cruiser thing (work in progress)
1998 full sus (modern parts)
2001 cyclocross bike
2005 track bike
2005 race hardtail
2006 (ish, not sure exactly) road bike
2008 steel "trail" hardtail

I like a diverse portfolio ;)

Not so many years ago I had all the bikes a man could ever need:
- ss mountain bike
- ss road bike
- geared road bike
- geared mountain bike
- cyclocross bike

Then need became want and things rapidly spiralled out of control to the point where I don't know how many bikes I have but the shed door won't shut properly without standing the commuter up on it's back wheel

However my shed is a relatively modest size and when I hear about the bikes that others own I feel inspired to seize the day and get more (usually less is more but in this case more is, well, more). The fever continues to burn within me and I'm a little scared that it will never abate.

"Bicycles are a way of efficiently utilizing (sic) resources while permitting personal freedom of movement... Everyone should have at least six."

Craig Mitchell, metallurgical engineer.

Great quote RS! Six is probably a livable number if they were the right six. I'm currently a little over that number.

20 CC/SP/WTB, 4 "Vintage Etceterini", 2 Clunkers, 2 Trials, 2 Modern.. oh, and 0 Konas -- for a total of 30.

.

I currently have;
2002 SE Racing Floval Flyer 24" wheel bmx/cruiser
2002 RM Vertex 70- All i could ever want from a mountain bike ;)
2002 Kona Caldera- not affraid to damage this one.
1994/5 KHS Montana Comp- A home for my DX groupset
1995/6 Univega 570 Alpina- A home for my XT groupset
1999 RSP 851 Cyclocross bike- For road use only :D

Frames are all keepers, but parts may be removed to nicer frames in the future as funds allow.
However, very very happy with the fleet at the moment ;)

Firm believer in the N+1 rule - space and budget the only limitations, and they have to be riders...

'62 Freddie Grubb - my dad's road bike - "refettled" and used on fine days
'94 Explosif - work in progress
'95/6 AA - retromod on slicks
'98 Kilaeau - regular retro ride, owned since new - frame was probably built in '97 ;-)
'02 Sub5 Pro - full bounce ride and future retro classic :)
'04 Giant Rincon - shopping bike
'09 Kaffenback - road bike

and I have mental vacancies for
Something in Ti
Something that folds - always fancied an Airnimal Chameleon
Full on road bike
'80s MTB - really like the idea of an Overbury's
Something modern in nice steel
