How do you finish a frame of unknown origin?

Hi,

I have a nice, light well built frame, unfortunately I can't find out who built or supplied it...see my other thread "Another newbie playing the Name my Frame game" for details.

While I have every intention of repainting and building up the bike, but I hate to see a frame without a full compliment of decals (they always look only half finished to me).

So the question is "How do you finish off a frame when you don't know who built/supplied it" or what tubing it is built from?

Look forward to your thoughts

Steve

I have similar problem. Nice frame with Holdsworth decals and badge but physical evidence suggests it is something else.

Either put your name on it or decal it up as a frame that a shop bought of the same period and style, if that makes sense. Loads of shops bought frames and stuck their name on them.

If you have it refinished by a shop then they will often add their own transfers. I have a rather nice frame with DeMayo on the downtube, with the small lettering 'refinished by' as part of the transfer.

Yes just best to go with the flow id have some cool decals with my name on infact I'm trying to get some Reynolds type stickers made up but worded something like Definitely NOT made of 531 with Butthead tubing just for a larf.

I designed some plain white/black decals for one of my bikes (name only, using Word and 'a photo manipulation programme') and had them printed locally onto plain white sticky backed vinyl by a company that make van decals. Gave them a CD with the design burned on.

Other colours are probably available ;)

My Dad used to build up old British motorbikes and whenever he had one which was a bit of a Frankenstein, he'd hand paint LLC Bitsa on them.

His initials plus Bitsa this, Bitsa that.

Hi Kell,

Nice idea, if all else fails.

I lean to the idea of building it up in shop livery and calling it a "Cy clone" or "tribute" and also put a decal under the downtube stating "builder/material unknown", or something similar.

I am deternined to find out what it is though :)
