How can I replicate a GT paintjob?

I have an urge to paint a GT frame in something like the original paintjobs that were available in 1992. My Tequesta (black with white stripes - is that Daktari?) is what I would like to re-do, but in different colours.

I can get the base colour done easily with powder-coat, and obviously a top coat of lacquer, but how do I do the stripes? I can't really tell if the paint was dribbled on from a height or a paint brush was used. Also the type of paint I need to use is important too.

If you haven't inspected a frame from that era I'll let you know that you can actually feel the stripes on the paintwork, so there is a decent thickness of paint.

I like the Avalanche paint too - its more like a sponged effect on top which may be easier - please post a pic if you have a close-up of that finish!

Good link - forgot about that.

Hammerite smooth paint was used....

Decals might be a nightmare though....

Any other ideas?

I'm going to do a stem for my Daktari Avalanche. I was thinking a plastic bag with paint in the corner and stab a pinhole in it (kinda like a pastry cone thingie) , then start drizzling the paint on randomly. Experimenting on some random gas pipe tubing first to get a good technique down first would be a good idea.

The dump normally has enough old bike frames to practice on for little or no cost?

how about using shoelaces covered in paint and swinging the lace so it hits the frame?

a bit blue peterish or in a 'art atack' style of doing thing but you never know!
