Hope Hubs

Hope's advice was that the ultralight was not for suspension forks. My Untralight has outlasted one rim (worn out to the point the braking surface bent from tyre pressure) and now doing duty on a rebuilt wheel. 2000 rigid singlespeed miles later it's fine. BUT I live in the New Forest, which is fast gravel tracks, not chunky stuff.

I think that as long as you build them 3 cross, and follow any spoke marks that are there already I think you stand the best chance of success. I've got two pairs of ti-glide/ti fatsos (bought second hand) and one pair of sports (all ally body) and mine are fine.

I might suggest that if you're a heavy guy who rides aggresively then maybe it would be better to look elsewhere.

Ti-glides from 1994, not a problem with hard XC riding inc jumps, drops etc (although I did retire them last year when swithcing to a disc setup) Imperative to get a proper wheelbuilder who knows what he's doing to build your wheels. Make sure they actually measure the tension they put on the spokes. Equal tension all around will make for a stronger wheel. Hope hubs seem to be more sensitive to differences in tension.

If you are worried enough to ask on a forum, then that worry will probably always be there nagging away at you.

Talk to the tech guys at Hope, I'm sure they will settle your concerns. If not, time for a new hub. As someone has already said - you won't enjoy it.

Still running the original Hopes that were on my '95 C-16R when I bought it. Suspension hub front and Ti-glide rear. My '99 Pace has a similar set up but with Hope discs.

Saying that I did have a fatso go in a big way a little while ago... But that was bought second (or maybe more) hand and I don't know the history of it.

Probably the most cracked hub shown on RB, but has anyone been running them consistently without problem?

Your hubs are more lethal than Nitro Glycerin, the vibrations of a rocky path could cause them to explode. You should definitely buy a new pair of Hope Pro III's

I'm curious if hope hubs with more or less spoke drillings fail. My intuition would tell me that 36h hubs would be less prone to failure, but it would be interesting to find out. I'm no metallurgist. In fact, I don't think I can even spell it.

Ive come across this too ,though ive never had one crack i tend to stay away from 36 and only go for 32 hole.

I did have a Ti glide on my clockwork and used that for jumping off stairs and things about 4' in height.Never had a problem :?
Stuffed my bomber seals though

Difference on the new Evo's
Maybe the seals are a tiny tiny bit better, otherwise Zero difference

suspension hub currently cracking with hairlins, fatso cracked as the person unlaced a front wheel to send it to me (still sent if f.o.c. though).
Ti Glide have not gone yet and I have a few.
Though I never ran them back in the day.

The front hubs that seem to go, from what i've seen, tend to be the later versions of it, when they got end caps, smoothed the curves and angles and basically have a bit less flesh to them.
The older chunkier angled types don't seem to go.

The mono's are a better and stiffer hub I've found though dont' look as fancy.

there are three fornt hubs
Lightweight (for rigid)
Suspension (for front sus)
FatSo for (ultimate front sus hub, large bearing, large internal axle diameter, push on caps, much like a modern hub design)

Yes the sus and fatso are stiffer on forks like the MAG20, but I ran an original hope hub (lightweight style) since BiTD, it's been hit hard as well, nough to dent and bend the rim and stop the bike in it's traks and it's still running along nicely, other thatn the grub screw thread going.
The mono (suspension) that had replaced it is superior in every way though, other than weight.
The Ti freehubs can crack as well on the Ti Glides (I have one :()

P.S
I would say that is a lightweight in the ebay link, not the ultralight.
there is too much bearing and flange imho.

.

Many thanks for all the input :) Good to here they don't all explode. I'd over the same advice that if in any doubt then don't bother, but I have rode these in the past. I guess it was just to confirm that they never all bit the dust and that some are still going strong.
