That's messed up, what is wrong with people who do things like this!?!
There is a war being waged, a mutli faceted conflict between cyclists and motorists and cyclists and pedestrians. Cyclists unfortunately are widely despised by pretty much all other road, trail and footpath users, and even more unfortunately it's for good reason.
Some cyclists are complete c*nts, and we all know it, whether they are ignoring the highway code and mounting pavements or jumping red lights that they feel don't apply to them, or tearing down popular walkways at breakneck speed with scant regard for walkers, often elderly, sometimes small children and any dogs that they may have with them.
Of course it's only a minority of cyclists who are absolute bastards and hooligans, but those are the only types of cyclist everyone else notices, and my feelings are that some cyclist or other has enraged a hiker to the point where he has been driven to madness and now wishes cyclists severe physical harm and even death.
It's not just hooligan bicyclists, but some motorcyclists and e-bikers too that are responsible for dragging all of us into this ongoing conflict. Of course I'm not condoning the cowardly psychotic behaviour in the OP, but it probably began with someone on two wheels behaving like a prat.

It's the media stirring it all for clicks and money.
But then drivers drive uninsured, unMOTd, through red lights, to close to people and cycles, drive and park on pavement blocking them and they do all that taking up a lot of space for 1 person and pollute while doing it with scant regards for anyone else, that's why they have so many accident and kill 5 people a day.
Just to go half a mile to school and park as close to the gate as they can, using more effort than parking up the road.
They know they are shit heads so pass it on to someone they think is a lesser person. The next ones down are cyclist as they're not paying a fortune in petrol* to move around.
* interesting how these drivers go on about costs, the cost of petrol etc yet still sit their idling their engines wasting that precious money.
As a side I drive everywhere and these drivers do my head in.

That is just sick behavior, there is no justification for this kind of random violence, I understand there are some yobbos out there causing trouble but unfortunately they never seem to be the ones affected... What sort of sick mind could do this...
It may well be a perceived quid pro quo.. but there are degrees of reasonability in everything. People piss each other off all the time, and there are always conflicts between parties with overlapping demands on any scarce resource..
However, the clear intention here was to cause severe physical harm, on a indiscriminate basis - and it was successful. This, in my view at least, goes beyond any measure of reasonable reciprocity from one trail user to another. No perceived slight from a rider, however big of a twat, to another trail user should generate this magnitude of a response from the latter. It is borderline psychotic.
