Hollotech 11 chain line question

As above. Just fitted to 2004 explosif. By eye I could have put both spacers on the non drive side. What's the score with this? I always try to line up the middle rings front and back on 7/8 square taper. Seems to work ok. Would it be the same for 9 spd with this setup?

The idea of three spacers is that the same BB and spindle will fit 68 or 73 mm BB shells with or without an E-type front mech and the outer face of the bearing cups can be the same distance apart with any configuration . With only 2 spacers in a 68mm shell the 2 bearing cup outers will be 2.5mm too close together if you see what I mean.

I do. But it fit ok tightening down on the splines without any play. So presumably it should come with three as standard?

Yes, they normally come with 3 spacers when you buy a BB.

Chain line is 50mm for these.

Just follow the setup instructions, still quite modern so still on Shimano website for all parts or just search the code on the web will find you the stuff.

Fc-M580 from what I can see, first Google link for me.

Full setup is

With just the 2 in a 68mm shell it will tighten down without play but you will crush the plastic tube between the 2 cups a little. I know, I did it by accident when I forgot to put the second spacer on. It wasn't damaged but it did rub on the axle and cause friction if I recall correctly.
