Hi and a bit of a sad story.............

not posted foor a couple of years, and then it was only a 'for sale ad' so I thought I'd break my duck with a sad story that I thought I would share.

On Saturday I popped over to my Dads new house to rip his carpets up, I put them in the van and took them to our local tip/recycling centre.

I put the carpets in the skip and I took the metal strips to the metal bin. In the skip were the usual collection of £69 specials, but I swore that I saw an 'Orange decal'. Closer inspection revealed an Orange P7, I couldnt believe it, no front wheel and a potato crisp rear, but the frame looked intact.

I couldnt reach it, but I got a bit of rope from the van and lassoed it and dragged it out. Sure enough, Orange P7, pretty good nick, complete with front and rear mech, chainset and levers, with a lovely etched seatpost. I've done a bit of trawling and I reckon she was a '97.

Anyhoo, one of the skip attendants comes up to me and asks what I'm doing removing stuff from the skip. To cut a long story short, he wouldnt let me take it......it was more than his jobsworth.........I pleaded and attempted bribary, he was having nothing. I'm sure he laughed as he threw it back into the skip............

What possesses folk to throw something like that away? My thoughts were it had been stolen and the new owner didnt realise what he had.

But surely the best way to 'recycle' something that someone has thrown away is to let someone else take it who will use it?? :?

Pretty much sums up the shocking state of the country we live in. Rules made by people so far removed from reality that they haven't got a clue :evil:

pretend to get agree and say "no way am i throwing that back thats my bike it was stolen 4/5 years ago and im taking it back" be forceful and but not rude and stand straight upright dont show any sign of backing down works everytime ps show some signs of relief that your getting it back as well body language is the key works 99% of the time

I've had the same at my local tip, one day i was up there and i saw a guy wheeling a 1980's Raleigh grifter (i know not retrobike, but it's the story we're after here!) towards the tipman,I didn't quite get to him in time and he handed it over to the tipman, i went over to him and asked could i have it............long story short...........'NO'........... i ended up tracking it down to a 2nd hand shop where i had to buy the bloody thing for £10!!!!!!!

Unfortunately its the inconsistency of it all that really pisses me off. Most recycling centres have resale areas where you can still pick up a bargain. However there are some that do not allow any sales whatsoever and would rather be paid the 50p - £1 per bike than accept £20 - £30 in their hand. These bikes get containerised and sent of to Africa.

H&S laws are miss-interpreted leading to draconian measures when it comes to anything second hand. Technically anything with a lead is not allowed to be sold on, even speakers. This works against charity shop donations and allows for very high quality items to be sent to the crusher.

So called 'recycling' is a huge waste and in no way environmentally friendly or as green as it struts around pretending.

Unfortunately things are only going to get worse as more larger fully automated recycling centres appear - in these, you just huzz you stuff over a ledge and it gets processed out of sight.
