Old BMX were meant to be heavy, they were built hard for a reason.

stuff like the gyro can be replaced for dirt cheap.
everything else, dip it in
Trust me im being conservative in funds on this one. Thanks for the links I did think about the dia compe as the brakes are all dia compe but I didnt like the name branding. I managed to get the SM one type for £9.00
Only problem is will it fit? 20250422_092449.webp

So I started on the rear wheel and its not in bad shape.
Had to cut the inner tube due to the Alu valve cap galavnised itself onto the valve :(
The Hub is a decent one Mutiny Black Ball, they have been known to make strong hubs that last and the bearings ran true after all these years.

The story goes, I did some research when the GT released their generic rear hub, there were issues was the spokes would worked themselves loose against the hub on hard landings. It was a known problem discussed over BMX museum.
So this previous owner had swapped out the generic rear hub for the Mutiny one.
The spokes are black painted, which TBF protected it from rust all these years.

Moving onto the front wheel original Hub GT in good nick but with silver spokes rusted, I have a packet of 40 black vocal ones laying around with black nipples just shy of 8 more anyone got any spare? :)
The rear cleaned up well Front needs re-spoking for sure. But also rim is in good order.
The Rims are Alex wheels and a good quality known brand for that area.
Rear is Alex supra J pro Tyres 20x1.95 Maxxis Good condition
Front is Alex Rims MX22’s Tyres Snafu 20x1.95 1”crease split surface.

Had to get heat on the seat post and anti sieze fluid over the last two days.
Finally gave out with some serious arm wiggling.
GT stampted 25.4mm looks roughly 400mm long.
Seat needs repair torn in corners.
Cleaned up the handle bars GT stampted and cleaned up really well, but needs some polishing to bring it back to the gleam
she used to be.
Decided to just stick to the OGM parts I've only seen two examples, and they all had after market bits to make it lighter, or more shinny! But this is a work horse bike IMO.
Plan on getting light rust off and touch up with flat black paint.
So only three things not stock if I list them here their prices will go higher 😂🤣

Crank arms are ok, my hands are in bad shape, but hey for the cause right!
The fork is work in progress so much work needed.
Ive kind of decided to experiment with vinegar when I spoted a cheap one for 35p and the Sarsons for £1.60 so curious about the effectiveness?
I will probably paint them black as I think the rust is pretty bad, otherwise rechroming is hard to find and I wont start till I make the decision???
I would use wood bleach, but its like so much money right now its not funny.
Anyone use Vinegar tell me of the experience time it took etc...?;)

Vinegar works but quite slowly. I quite like using citric acid - cheap enough if buying a reasonable quantity.

Be nice to keep as much chrome as possible but depends how you want to use/store it. A wipe with an oily rag every couple of months does wonders!

Hey Lucidone, If you think its best to keep original as possible I will make the effort then 😅
My reasoning was simple enough to seal the bear metal, but I can't assess until the rust has all gone.
Plus they are just trick nuts in my mind even though they came with the original bike.
If new owner or me wanted to chrome again, a simple acid bath before chroming would take the paint off in seconds. Sealing the metal is where I was going with it. :)
