Help!

Acquired an old Shamal rear a while ago, and the cassette wasn't as nice and clicky as some of the others I have had, and tonight I thought Id have a little look see if it needed regreasing and undid the cones, repacked the bearings and there's three little springs and plates that make the click when you turn the cassette and I can't for the life of me get them to stay in place while I put the cassette back in, does anybody know what I mean? And if so, how do I get it back in?

First time I have seen inside a freehub so I don't know if this is a common thing..

Sounds like you have taken the freewheel body apart ,am I right ?
The spring things will be the pawls. Use a thread of cotton looped over them and pull them in against the spring, while then placing the outer body back in place. The thread can then be pulled out as you lower the outer body down just before it is completely home so as not to trap the thread. This is if I am on the right lines here.

i have done this myself, all i can say is . . . it's a bar steward to get back together and i find it takes a combination of luck and time. i even have the so called correct campag tool but i find it useless. i tend to slightly over grease the pawls and springs to help them stay where they are supposed to be from there i find it's just persistence.

i have never tried the cotton approach though, sounds like it could work though.

The thread trick goes back years to freewheels etc.. I've even heard of someone using a long hair on a run when a freewheel disintegrated out in the wilds.

I actually stumbled on the thread trick when I was ony about 13 years old. I used to mess around with my bikes pulling the freewheels to bits to re-grease etc. I am not sure what these Shamal hubs entail though as I have never dealt with them.

Will give the thread a go, was trying to get them to stay in using an elastic band but there was no way to get it off, the string sounds like a genius idea, are all freehubs like this? ( have only ever taken apart screw on hubs and track hubs)
