help with longer brake cables

Hi guys

My bike has sturmey archer hub brakes (and 3 speed gears)

I am looking to change the levers for inverted style ones, problem is i need longer cables to make it work

These are the business ends of the cable

Hub end

lever end

Both brake nipples seem like they have been attached in the factory, is it possible to buy longer cables and attach these nipples or do the cables only come in certain pre made lengths?

Pre-made, with barrel and pear ends. becuase they where the two common types, you could select which you needed, called 'universal' normally.


How long do they need to be as that'll be the point and I guess.


SJS cycle will probably have some.



There maybe some crimp/clipon end parts though, never needed any so have never looked, again SJS seem to sell it if it there.

Ah.
I have just had a load of homemade wine, but these look like Raleigh's own, super rare cables with permanently attached nipples at each end.
Your choices are to speak to Derek at http://www.oldbiketrader.co.uk for some NOS ones, or to try and make your own with a solderless nipple.

not to sure about the length, need to get the cables off and measure them up

I had a look at the SJS site (great site very comprehensive) cant seem to find the the sturmey archer cables they did have a great selection of cables with a barrel end

Is it possible to attach a pear end myself ? i could cut them to the exact length, slide on the brake adjuster assembly then attach the pear end

Had a look on the sturmey archer site doesnt seem to shed any light on it, it does mention a "pinch bolt" though could this be used instead of the pear end?

That might work, but have a look at oldbiketrader first.

ooohh was thinking gear cable not brake cable.

But it looks to me that the pear sits in the washer just creating and end. so just put and and clamp on there instead.


SJS do do the sturmey gear cable, and comes with lots of bits and adaptors by the looks of it. Only £4 as well.

Try the above place or try ringing SJS as well.

Whatever happened to soldering on your own nipples? (Oooooh-errr, obviously.)

I'm new to bike mechanics whats involved with soldering on a nipple?

The hole in the nipple is tapered, you push the cable right through flare the end and tin it. Then pull it back into place and solder it in place with plenty of solder. You need a big iron for this, not a poxy little 10W job from Maplins.

Don't know if anybody still sells them though. Clarks sell a solderless pear nipple (part# CX-72) which will get the job done, but isn't as tidy.

Update

Ordered the cable kits and other bits from SJS (had to get 3mm taken out of the bars to get the levers to fit) finally got round to making up the cables tonight

All gone well pinch bolts seem to work well, question is the kit was actually for gears not brakes, compared the old cables with new and the old ones were quite a bit thicker than the new ones i have fitted,

Will i get problems with these finer cables? ( the brakes are a little spongy but i may just need to tune the adjuster assembly on the cables)
