Help please - Could anyone identify my Carlton frame ?

Well, isn't this a coincidence?

I've had this Carlton in the shed for a year or two and have also wondered about its pedigree. Without wanting to hijack this thread it looks like your frame's brother! Lugs aren't quite the same and mine has a serial of D7714.

However, I'm not sure that I go with 'Corsa' here (although I value Spokesmann's info and insight). How about 'Corsair'?

Seem possible?

Those lugs look like Crespera which means it us likely a much more modern frame. Nice though :)

Carlton had a habit of naming their bikes with a c or a k...... corsa, cobra, corsair, criterium, kermesse, continental etc :)

Great frame! I never knew the Corsair name went back that far. Lovely to see though. The Crespera lugs place this frame from about 67 onwards...

Thanks for the input from both of you; I couldn't quite go with the Mid 50s suggested by the D in the serial. Sadly tapping the frame suggests that it is certainly not 531 :(. That's a 26.4 seatpost in there.

Mindful of not wanting to hijack the OP; do you both think that my frame and his are 'of a kind'?

Hello Hillwalker,

Delighted to see your Carton frame. It looks so much like mine except for the head lugs! Ive been told that they are Nervex.

Please don't worry about my thread I'm delighted to hear anything that can help me learn more to do with Carlton bicycles. and yes they could be brother and sister.

However I'm a little confused as to what my frame should be called when I get to start work on it.?

Im looking forward to more input.

Hello DavidT

I think that if we look at the 's' in 'Corsair' on my frame that it is centred on the 2 lower and 3 upper Olympic rings. The same also appears to be the case with the 's' on your frame, so I would suggest that you also have a Carlton Corsair :). Both would therefore seem to be early examples of a famous British marque. Carlton decals (but sadly not those exactly for a Corsair) can be found at this well known vintage source: http://www.hlloydcycles.com/pdflistlatest.pdf

Happy to take better pics for you if that would help to recreate your frame's decals

Best wishes

Your lugs are Nervex, at least I don't think so!
