Help needed identifying my recently acquired Marin frame

if the sound changes while snipping along the downtube you should hear if the tube is butted (ift) or not (nt). afaik there are no differences apart from that.

well apart from these

Nail trail didn't have butted tubing.
Rock Ridge had an Alcoa DB downtube
Fire Mountain had a much thicker diameter downtube and all main tubes where double butted

He still has not come back with a downtube diameter/circumference.
circumference of
138mm = RR or NT
160mm = IFM

I think in 1994 they all used 160mm circumference downtubes but we have frame numbers on this site where they are letters to designate the frame model not a number :? hence assuming it a 1993 model not a 1994 built in 1993.

Though in '94 the BFT/IFT still had all tube DB, the RR just the downtube and the NT Plain gauge.

What sort of build are you heading for ?

I was looking at a full retro build hence trying to correctly identify the frameset and then to get the original specifications for the bike ( assuming after polishing I dont get itchy to build and ride lol).

Finally found my sliding calipers !!! The frame downtube has a diameter of 44mm and when tapping along its length it sounds almost tunefull in the middle whereas at each end it changes to a quite dull sound, this is also the case with all the other tubes.

Assuming that means double butted (the sound*) it's a Rocky Ridge.

Which would put the other members form the code as a Rocky Ridge as well.




(* as it would normally sound duller at the ends as there is less distance to the end fixed end, but I think from your description is the Double Butted sound).

Thanks heaps for all your help Fluffy Chicken, now I finally have something to aim at Although I feel this frame will be built up in a number of different ways as I search for original spec parts.
